Which vaccine can my child get? Children ages 5-11 will be vaccinated with a children’s dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine. Children ages 12 and older are vaccinated with the normal dose of the Pfizer vaccine. Consult your pediatrician if you are unsure which vaccine dose is best for your child.
The dose of the Pfizer vaccine for kids 5-11 is a 10-microgram dose. Kids 12 years and older receive a 30-microgram dose, which is the normal dose given to teens and adults. Everyone who receives the Pfizer vaccine should get two shots, with 3 weeks in between shots. The Moderna and Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccines are currently authorized for use in adults only.
Where can kids ages 5-11 get the vaccine? Kids can be vaccinated by their pediatrician or at one of the hundreds of locations across the State with clinicians who are trained and ready to provide a COVID vaccine to children. These include pharmacies as well as some hospitals, health systems, and local health departments. In addition, many schools will be offering COVID vaccines through school-based health centers or on-site clinics. If your child’s pediatrician is not vaccinating patients, or your child does not have a pediatrician, you can find a vaccine provider and schedule an appointment at https://covidvaccinefinder.ct.gov. Keep in mind that children ages 5-11 must visit a vaccine clinic that offers the Pfizer vaccine for kids ages 5-11. There is no cost to you when your child gets vaccinated by a pediatrician or at a vaccine clinic.
